Selma's Story - From Sick, Injured Stray to Ready for Adoption!

11:15 AM

Oh, Hey there!

Selma here saying Hi! *Paw Wave* I'm so glad to see you again!

My Foster Brother, Tucker, has been stealing the spotlight lately - so I haven't seen much of you unless we're pals on Facebook (hey - why aren't we pals on Facebook?). But I've got lots to tell.

I was a pretty sad story when I you last heard from me... Remember? I was found as a lonely stray girl with a busted up paw (ouchies!) when the Humane Educational Society here in Chattanooga found me. I was so scared, but I was glad they picked me up and brought me back to the shelter where I'd be safe. They took me to the doctor so I could get my paw-paw fixed up. But something still wasn't right. I was sick a lot - and I ended up with my kennel always being really yucky. It was a pretty horrible time for me.

I had something seriously wrong with my tummy!

Us strays have to fend for ourselves, you know. That means we sometimes are forced to eat things that aren't good for us. I think that must have been what happened to me. Something was really causing havoc in my tum-tum. But the great people at HES took me to the doctor again and I had surgery - yep, they sliced this sweet bit of fur wide open to see what was going on in there! Yikes!

But they fixed whatever it was. And stitched me back up! Whew!

So I was all fixed up - but still a little bit of a wreck.

I was weak...

Uncle Chris had to carry me out to the truck!

And since my tummy hadn't been working right, I was REALLY skinny!

I'm no vertibernarian, but I don't think I'm supposed to be that skinny!

And I'll be honest with ya? I was a little bit frightened...

Am I going to be okay?

But I realized right away that being at Uncle Chris's house as a foster doggie would be okay. He and Auntie Kate loved me right from the start and were very gentle and stuff. And the great people at HES made sure I had food that would be good for my recovering tummy.

I even had a safe place to call my very own (with a super soft bed!).

A room of one's own - that Virginia Woolf lady had it right!!

I started getting better a little bit every day. My tummy wasn't all yucky anymore, so I was clean and happy. And I was able to put on some healthy pounds and start to feel more like myself - heck, this was the best I had EVER felt!

I could finally be my Silly Selma Self!
(if you look careful, you can see my scar was healing nicely)

And rest and relax in the sun. No more worrying for this girl!

Now that I felt better, I discovered that I had been sent to some sort of foster dog boarding school! Uncle Chris worked with me to learn new stuff I'd need to be a good family member.

I learned:
  • House Training & Crate Training - I'm now 100% House Trained!
  • How to "SIT" and "DOWN" - I'm really good at obedience skills, all you have to do is ask!
  • To Relax - I had been so stressed out and sick at the shelter, it was nice to just take it easy.
  • To Get Along - Tucker was already at UC's house, so he and I became fast friends. I really like him. I might just follow him around once in a while (okay, a lot of the while!)
  • To Be a Family Member - This is just my foster family, but I'm such a sweet girl - I'm ready for my Forever Family whenever they find me! I hope it's soon.
Now I'm a Healthy, Happy, Playful, and Sweet puppy dog! I will freely admit to being a bit of a TomBoy. Let's face it - all the really cool girls are, right? I love to play with my tennis ball and a simple rope toy in the yard!

Isn't that a fun game? I haven't quite perfected "Fetch" yet (I like to have you chase me around while I am silly with the toy), so we just do an exchange of rope toy and tennis ball. It's so much fun!

I mentioned that I'm a tomboy - kind of a coutry gal at heart. I'm not into all the fancy and fru-fru. Simple stuff makes me happy. Like my Kong toy. Did you know it was modeled on a suspension part from a Volkswagon a guy found in a junkyard? Doesn't get more tomboy than that...

Did you turn the sound on? There's not even anything in that Kong (though I do LOVE them with peanut butter frozen inside!). I just like having something to play with!

Let's see, what else...

Oh yeah! I love chewbones (bully sticks are a super special treat). And I love snuggling and cuddling up for a quiet snooze while UC and Auntie Kate are watching TV or whatever.

This is such an embarrassing picture, sheesh!
But I am a little cutie, ain't I?

And I'm all healthy and filled out to a normal weight now and stuff. I'm all ready to roll out with my Forever Family...

I'm a healthy, happy, and loving pupper!

You know what else I forgot to mention?? Gosh, it's the most important thing!

I'm a Lover! I love to cuddle if you want, or I'll lie at your feet so we can be close. Uncle Chris and I did an experiment with me taking a nap with him in the people bed - and I was perfect. You don't believe me?

Well, first - I had to kiss him a bunch because we're pals and I'm super affectionate! Then I decided where the best spot for me was going to be - right beside him, of course... And I cuddled up to his side and we took a little nap. It was awesome!

Now, note that last story was an experiment. As a foster dog, I'm not normally allowed on the furniture (Uncle Chris gets down on the floor with me and we snuggle and cuddle and play). But I just want to point out that if you wanted a warm, sweet, kissy-face tomboy to hang out on the couch with you? Or maybe snuggle up for extra warmth on a cold night?

I'm. Your. Girl!

Right, I have to go now. I'm a busy little lady, you know. There might be a toy that needs my help, or a cookie that needs munching (omigosh - I love milkbones!), or a blankie that needs a napping partner.

If you think you'd like to meet my sweet and fun Selma self? It's easy, just shoot me a message on the Foster Dog Facebook page, or comment below, or contact the awesome people at the Humane Educational Society!

One last thing - If I sit like a good girl, will you click "SHARE" so more people see my story and how far I've come? I'm super ready to be a fun member of my Forever Family - and you can make a huge difference with just that one little click!

Thanks so much for Sharing my story!! Love You!

Okay - that's all for now. I do have a super awesome surprise for you, but you'll just have to wait for it... Can you stand it?!? I'm pretty excited!

Love and Sweet Pupper Kisses,
~ Selma
